The Cachet program began a collaboration with Rachel Speck fall of 2014. The prints she has made while in residence were on display at the Museum for our event, "Beneath the Womb Veil". She will speak in May at our event focusing on herbs and female healthcare.
Mission statement:
"In this work, I recreated bottle labels and box advertisements for historical medicines pertaining to women's health and cosmetics, through hand drawn, hand pulled posters. The reason for this was to pay tribute to the way that labels were once made and as a way to remind people that during the time that these labels and their medicines were hand made and picked by people, not made by computers or digitally altered. These medicines had a more personal feel as did the doctor and pharmacist visits.
The female students that I work with and mentor motivated this exploration. Through the discussions of prints, I want them to be able to connect past aspects of female health care with present aspects by learning about historic malpractice (on slaves, immigrants, and the lower class) through prescription of toxic drugs, unhealthy beauty standards, drug/surgery experimentation, and advertisements. I want my students to be aware of herbs pertaining to female health care, hygiene, and contraception that are not as detrimental to physical or mental, taken correctly. I want them to question the medical industry as it is today, and to know about the negative effects that medical corporations and advertisements can have on them."
