On October 2, 2014 artists, restoration ecologists and policy-makers converge at the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum for The Multispecies Salon Presents: Hope in Blasted Landscapes, Revisited
Salon organized and hosted by Eben Kirksey, Ph.D. (Environmental Humanities at UNSW Australia).
At the original Multispecies Salon in 2010, artists, anthropologists, and natural scientists from multiple disciplines came together to discuss the topic of “Hope in Blasted Landscapes.” This panel took place shortly after Admiral Thad Allen announced that BP’s Macondo oil well was “effectively dead.” Four years after this disaster, toxic oil still lingers in the Gulf. We are reengaging with some of the original salon participants and bringing new voices to the table - to explore cautious hopes in the aftermath of this disaster.
Multispecies Salon 2014 speakers include:
Jacqueline Bishop, New Orleans multi-media artist
John Spencer Creevy , from Herman, Herman & Katz L.L.C
Pippin Frisbie-Calder, New Orleans printmaker
Scott Eustis, of the Gulf Restoration Network
Courtney Kearney, Naval Research Laboratory
Maria Brodine, Colombia University
At the event, images of the pulsing ecosystem that shelters and feeds coastal residents from Venice to New Orleans will be on display by the Gulf Restoration Network. Grandiose wetland prints by Pippin Frisbie-Calder will give the sense of standing amidst the abundant wildlife that is still flourishing in untamed swamplands. Satellite images of phytoplankton, courtesy of Courtney Kearney, will enable us to see large-scale patterns generated by some of the Gulf’s smallest inhabitants.
Dr. Eben Kirksey is currently a visiting scholar at CUNY Graduate Center, New York, NY. His most recent book The MULTISPECIES SALON will be available for purchase at the event. More information can be found at www.multispecies-salon.org
